The Abel Arts Collective was founded by artist Erik Abel and his wife Nellie in 2014. After several years of supporting great nonprofits through the donations of art, design, and print sales, the Abels felt they could make a bigger impact through collaborations with an organization of their own. So they combined their passions of art, philanthropy, travel, and nature to create the Abel Arts Collective. The Abel Arts Collective is a not for profit organization currently awaiting its 501(c)3 certification.
![]() The Nicaragua Mural Project The Nicaragua Mural Project was the premier Abel Arts Collective project of 2014. Taking place in Gigante, Nicaragua, Abel Arts collaborated with Project WOO and Surf For Life, two merging nonprofits that have been building schools and community centers across Central America since 2006. In collaboration with the Gigante Youth Group and Health Committee, the Abel Arts Collective designed and painted a two wall mural in the village's new Community Health Center. |

The North Shore Project
In May 2015, the Abel Arts Collective partnered with environmental nonprofits Sustainable Coastlines HI and PangeaSeed to create an art & environmental curriculum for a group of local North Shore Elementary kids. Led by North Shore art teacher Laura Couto, the project engaged a group of kids in an after school group for 8 weeks with the intent to foster a habit of activism and encourage expression of environmental issues through a series of art-focused lessons. The culmination of the project was an art show at the Wyland Gallery, Haleiwa in which the kids presented their own works of art inspired by the environment as well as a 6 foot x 2.5 foot mosaic created by the participating kids. The mosaic was made up entirely of miscellaneous plastic pieces found on the local beaches.
